Mexico

A few weeks ago, I took my first trip to REAL Mexico (apparently Tijuana doesn’t count).  It was a great trip filled with family, food, heat, sites, and visits to many cities whose names I can’t pronounce.  As this is a food blog, I will mostly talk about food, but I will talk a little about the trip.

As many of you will agree with me, Mexican food is delicious!  Tacos, tortas, chilaquiles, enchiladas, and so much more, and everything with a side of beer.  Everything tasted wonderful, and I have a new roll of fat to prove it.    The only complaint I have about Mexican food, is that there are no vegetables anywhere!  Everything is meat, beans, salsa, and tortillas wrapped differently.  Don’t get me wrong, I love all these foods, but by the end of the week, I was desperately craving vegetables!  I did try a few new things while in Mexico.

I guess, in Mexico, you don’t need a building to run a restaurant.  There were so many tents on the side of the road where people set up shop and serve food.  I don’t even know if they have running water, but somehow, they make great food.  On the morning of Mr. Hotness’s cousin’s wedding, we went to one of these tents to have some barbacoa tacos and a soup called consumme (see bottom right picture in the collage above).  It was good.  His family also had me eat tacos made from organ meat…I am not even sure from what animal it was from…I was able to eat it, but I slathered it with salsa.

We also went to a restaurant called Perros y Burros.  They only serve hot dogs and burritos, but their specialty is flavored beer!  I had a mango flavored beer while Mr. Hotness got a coconut flavored beer.  They were more juice-tasting rather than beer tasting, but after a long day in the sun and tons of walking, they were very refreshing.  (Yeah, that’s me with sun burn and mosquito bites.)

Besides the food, we got to see a lot of the history of Mexico.  There is so much to see in Mexico City alone.  I never realized how rich the history is there.  From Aztecs, to the Spanish conquerors and modern development, Mexico City and the surrounding area has so much to tell.  I would definitely recommend taking a trip, just make sure you have some trust worthy guides because the area is still a little dangerous.

I would like to take a moment to thank Mr. Hotness’s cousin and her husband for taking a week off of work to hang out with us and show us the sites.  They were so knowledgeable about the sites we went to.  It was like having our own personal tour guide.  Also would like to thank his aunt for letting us stay in her home during our trip!  Muchas Gracias!…(I hope I spelled that right)
